MORE INFO:

Ståle Stein Berg is a prominent Norwegian screenwriter, director, and film industry executive who has played a significant role in shaping contemporary Norwegian cinema and television. Born on August 14, 1971, in Hovet, Hol, Buskerud, Norway, Berg's journey in film began unconventionally—he initially studied philosophy in Bergen before moving to Oslo for civil service at the Oslo Film and TV Academy, followed by travels around the world.

Berg was part of the first class of screenwriters to graduate from The Norwegian Film School in Lillehammer in 2000, where he later became a PhD stipend recipient. He holds the distinction of being the first person in Norway to earn a doctorate in artistic development work with emphasis on film, completing his arts-based PhD in May 2009.

His screenwriting career began with Jonny Vang (2003), marking the start of a prolific output that includes acclaimed films such as Vinterkyss (Winter Kiss, 2005), for which he won the Kanon Prize for Best Screenplay alongside Sara Johnsen, To Liv (Two Lives, 2012), and the drama series Størst av alt (2007) and Okkupert (Occupied, 2017). Internationally, Berg has written screenplays for the German film "Zwei Leben" (2012) and the Swiss series "Bulle" (2020).

Beyond screenwriting, Berg has held several influential positions in the Norwegian film industry. He was a partner and executive producer at Tenk.tv (2011-2016), worked as a feature film and drama series consultant at the Norwegian Film Institute (2016-2019), and served as Section Leader for Artistic Evaluation at NFI from January 2019 to November 2021. Since May 2022, he has been Head of Development at Maipo Film, the same company that produced his screenwriting debut "Jonny Vang" in 2003.

Berg was awarded professor competency in film screenwriting by The Norwegian Film School in 2020, reflecting his extensive experience in coaching, mentoring, and teaching screenwriting at the highest level. His expertise in creative development and management of creative processes has made him a sought-after consultant and educator in the Norwegian film industry.
