Daughter of the Sun
Synopsis
LĂĄvrasiid Ăigi, the original Sami title, means âa time during autumnâ. Since ancient times, this was the season when the Sami hunted reindeer. At the start of the film, a young Sami boy is dreaming about the hunt.
Suddenly he hears something he has never heard before: joik. He falls in love with the singer, the Daughter of the Sun. To win her, he must keep her hidden in his tent for three days and three nights without lighting a fire. He doesnât manage it.
He thinks the sky is cloudy and takes a chance. Through a gap in the clouds, the Star, her father, sees her and takes her home. But the boy has learned the power of the joik. He wins a great herd of reindeer, and he carries within him the greatest love of all.

Mission
Daughter of the Sun is about the power of the joik, and how it can move both people and animals. In Sami mythology the Sun is the greatest of the gods. The Sun sent his daughter down to the Sami to teach them the joik, and with its power they could tame the wild reindeer.
The film is also a hymn to autumn and to love. It never treats the boyâs loss as defeat. He does not get the Daughter of the Sun, but his love for her stays with him, and nobody can take it away. For Anita Killi, the melancholy of autumn belongs with nature, old tales and love, and the filmâs original title carries that mood.
The film follows the tradition of the epic tale, with long scenes where music, joik and nature carry the story. Musician and composer Roger Ludvigsen wrote the score. Killi wanted to work with him after hearing his CD Orbina (1993). Together with the rest of the sound design, the music is central to the film. The voices are performed by Sami actors and were recorded in both North Sami and Norwegian.
