Gro Dahle (born 15 May 1962) is a Norwegian poet and writer. Dahle was born in Oslo, and is the daughter of businessman Øystein Dahle. She grew up in Tønsberg, Aruba and New Jersey. She studied English philology, history of religion, and psychology at the University of Oslo, and also completed several writing courses.
Dahle made her literary début in 1987 with Audiens (Audience), a collection of poetry. Since then Dahle has written over 50 books in different genres, poetry collections, three novels, three novellas, short stories, children's theatre pieces, radio plays, essays and children's books. Several picture books for children arose from collaboration with her husband, Norwegian illustrator and author Svein Nyhus.
Dahle is a stylistically naïve, imaginative and burlesque writer often focusing on psychological problems and relations. Her work as a children's book author is particularly notable for addressing challenging themes that are often overlooked in children's literature. Her most internationally recognized work is "Sinna Mann" (Angry Man), a book about a boy witnessing domestic violence, which was designed to be a tool used by culture centers and therapists to address the topic of domestic violence. This groundbreaking picture book was adapted into an acclaimed animated short film in 2009 by director Anita Killi at Trollfilm. The 20-minute film, using distinctive cut-out animation techniques, has been showcased at over 100 international film festivals and garnered numerous awards, including the Grand Prix at the International Animation Film Festival Hiroshima. In 2010, it was reportedly the most awarded film worldwide and continues to be widely used in educational settings to raise awareness about domestic violence.
Dahle has received several national awards for her work. In 1999 she was the official festival poet at the Bergen International Festival. In 2002 she won the Brage Prize for literature for Snill (Nice), a picture book for children, and in 2003 the Best Children's Book Prize from the Norwegian Ministry of Culture for Sinna Mann. In 2014 she received the Norwegian Critics Prize for Literature with illustrator Svein Nyhus, and in 2015 the Triztán Vindtorn Poetry Prize. In 2022, she was awarded the Brage Prize.
Her picture book "Snill" (What a Girl!) has gained significant academic attention for its feminist themes, telling the story of a girl who becomes invisible by always being well-behaved until she fights her way out of conformity. Her books have been translated into many languages.
Dahle lives and works on the island Tjøme. She has Asperger syndrome and gives lectures in creative writing in Norway and Sweden. She continues to collaborate with her husband Svein Nyhus and their daughter Kaia Dahle Nyhus on various picture book projects.
