MorE INFO:

Menno de Nooijer (https://denooijer.org/) is a Dutch interdisciplinary artist who, together with Paul de Nooijer, has pioneered innovative approaches to photography and film in combination with theatre and performance art. Their artistic collaboration began in the late 1980s, with their first joint performance taking place in 1989 at the third Fotobienale in Enschede during a screening of the film Nobody Had Informed Me.

In the mid-1990s, as digitalization was rapidly transforming the artistic landscape, the de Nooijer duo made the conscious decision to focus their creative efforts on exploring the intersection of traditional and digital media. Their breakthrough performance Creation/Painting with Light premiered in Hildesheim, Germany, in 1995, paying tribute to the magic of the darkroom where black transforms to white and vice versa. This work presents the essence of the photographic process—writing with light—as an incantation ritual.

Inspired by the multimedia possibilities of computer technology and the interdisciplinary ideals of Oscar Schlemmer's Bauhaus theatre and the concept of Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art), de Nooijer and his collaborator developed a distinctive artistic approach in the late 1990s. Their work consciously blends traditional disciplines, incorporating both analogue and digital photography and film as integral components of larger, immersive artistic events.

Since 2000, the growing network of summer festivals in the Netherlands and Belgium has provided de Nooijer with platforms to present new theatre productions that exist in the borderlands between art, performance, dance, and film.

De Nooijer has also worked as an Artist in Residence at Trollfilm in Norway, where he collaborated with the acclaimed animation studio. His film Is heaven blue? #2 was produced by Anita Killi and Lillian Løvseth at Trollfilm, demonstrating his ability to work across cultural boundaries and integrate his multimedia approach with animation and film production.

Throughout his career, de Nooijer has consistently explored and expanded the visual possibilities of the photographic medium—both analogue and digital—in dynamic relationship with film, theatre, and visual art, establishing himself as an innovator in multimedia performance and interdisciplinary artistic practice.
